Cyrix MediaGX Processor
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Cyrix MediaGX processor?
A. The MediaGX processor pioneered a new generation of Windows-compatible processors that integrate the sound, graphics and memory control by putting these functions within the processor.

Q. How does the MediaGX processor work?
A.The MediaGX processor integrates the PCI interface, coupled with audio, graphics and memory control functions, right into the processor unit. To pull the sound and graphics hardware onto the MediaGX processor, Cyrix enhanced the x86 architecture by creating four exclusive Cyrix processor features: XpressRAM, XpressGraphics, XpressAUDIO and Virtual System Architecture (VSA).

Q. Does the MediaGX run Windows and Windows-compatible software?
A.Yes. The MediaGX is transparent to software applications, thereby assuring compatibility.

Q. How does a MediaGX system perform relative to Pentium designs?
A.A user can expect a MediaGX system to provide equivalent performance as a Pentium system at the same MHz.

Q. Sometimes when I boot into Windows 95, I get a message 'While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.' What can I do?
A. Some systems based on 233MHz and faster MediaGX processors may experience Windows protection errors when loading the NDIS.vxd file when booting into Windows 95. Occurrences of this hardware/software issue are rare at 233MHz and intermittent at 266MHz and greater. When the error is encountered, your only choice is to reboot the system. This issue is confined to the Windows 95 operating system. Neither Windows 98 or Windows NT operating systems exhibit this problem.

Cyrix and Microsoft engineers worked closely to develop an update for the NDIS.vxd component in Windows 95. Microsoft does not allow Cyrix to distribute the solution, however Microsoft Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) will provide an update. To obtain support, call Microsoft Windows 95 Support between the hours of 8a.m. and 6p.m. (U.S. Pacific time) at (425) 635-7000 in the U.S. and (905) 568-4494 in Canada. You will need your Windows 95 identification number to obtain support. The number can be found on the original Windows 95 manual or from your Windows Desktop.Tell the CSR what processor (i.e. MediaGX-266MHx) and motherboard you are using, if possible. It will also help to mention the Microsoft knowledge base article Q184464.

OEMs should contact their Microsoft Technical Account Manager (TAM) for more information.

Q. Where can I get more information about the MediaGX processor?
A. For information about current MediaGX technology, click here or visit National Semiconductor's Web site at www.national.com.
